    ESCORTED BY DETACHMENTS OF THE HOUSEHOLD CAVALRY, THE QUEEN DROVE IN THE IRISH STATE COACH FROM BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT IN THIN AUTUMN SUNSHINE. HER SISTER, PRINCESS MARGARET RODE WITH HER IN THE COACH, AS PRINCE PHILIP IS STILL IN LATIN AMERICA.

    THE ANCIENT TRADITIONAL CEREMONY TOOK PLACE IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS. MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS WERE SUMMONED FROM THEIR OWN CHAMBER BY A PARLIAMENTARY CEREMONIAL OFFICIAL, BLACK ROD. THE QUEEN, WEARING A FULL-LENGTH WHITE LACE EVENING DRESS, PUT ON HER PARLIAMENTARY CRIMSON ROBE AND THE IMPERIAL STATE CROWN WHEN SHE ARRIVED AT THE HOUSE OF LORDS.

    IN HER SPEECH FROM THE THRONE (WHICH IS PREPARED BY THE CABINET AND OUTLINES THE POLICIES THE GOVERNMENT INTEND TO FOLLOW IN THE COMING SESSION), THE MAIN POINTS WERE:
    IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS: EFFORTS TO REDUCE INTERNATIONAL TENSION AND MORE VIGOROUS SUPPORT FOR THE UNITED NATIONS; FULL SUPPORT FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION; A REVIEW OF DEFENCE POLICY AND EFFORTS TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS; A FULL PART IN EUROPEAN ORGANISATIONS; AND INDEPENDENCE FOR THE GAMBIA.

    IN HOME AFFAIRS: MEASURES TO STRENGTHEN THE ECONOMY AND INCREASE EXPORTS; THE ELIMINATION OF RESTRICTIVE PRACTICES IN INDUSTRY; PUBLIC OWNERSHIP OF THE IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY; INCREASED PENSIONS AND OTHER INSURANCE BENEFITS; ABOLITION OF PRESCRIPTION CHARGES IN THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE; MEASURES AGAINST RACIAL DISCRIMINATION; STEPS TO CONTROL RENTS, BUILD MORE HOUSES AND CONTROL THE SUPPLY OF LAND. THERE IS ALSO TO BE A FREE (NON-PARTY) DEBATE ON THE ABOLITION OF THE DEATH PENALTY.
