    IN KENYA, AS IN MOST COUNTRIES, THE PRESS CARRIED NOT ONLY THE NEWS OF SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL'S DEATH ON SUNDAY BUT STORIES OF HIS LIFE. PRESIDENT KENYATTA WAS THE FIRST OF 500 PEOPLE WHO SIGNED THE CONDOLENCE BOOK AT THE BRITISH INFORMATION LIBRARY IN NAIROBI. HE WAS FOLLOWED BY MINISTERS OF HIS GOVERNMENT.

IN HIS MESSAGE TO THE QUEEN, PRESIDENT RADMAKRISHNAN DESCRIBED SIR WINSTON AS "THE GREATEST ENGLISHMAN WE HAVE KNOWN" WHO HAD "RENEWED OUR FAITH IN FREEDOM IN THE MOST DIFFICULT YEARS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR."
    IN AUSTRALIA, TELEVISION AND RADIO STATIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY INTERRUPTED THEIR SUNDAY EVENING PROGRAMMES TO GIVE THE NEWS OF SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL'S DEATH. THE NEWS WAS ANNOUNCED ???AIN IN THE NEXT MORNING'S NEWSPAPERS AND, AS IN SO MANY OTHER COUNTRIES, FLAGS WERE FLOWN AT HALF-MAST. THE ACTING PRIME MINISTER, MR. JOHN McEWEN, SAID: "SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL MADE A MARK ON HISTORY, BOTH IN PEACE AND WAR, PROBABLY GREATER THAN ANY MAN WHO HAS EVER LIVED."
    IN SALISBURY, RHODESIA, THE PRIME MINISTER, MR IAN SMITH SAID: "TO THOSE WHO VALUE LIBERTY AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH, SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL WILL ALWAYS REMAIN ONE OF THEIR GREATEST CHAMPI CHAMPIONS.     IN CANADA, THE PRIME MINSTER, MR LESTER PEARSON, SAID THE INSPIRATION OF SIR WINSTON'S LEADERSHIP AND LIFE WOULD ENDURE FOR ALL TIME. AS ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE, ALL ACTIVITY WAS HALTED FOR TWO MINUTES ON THE TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE IN TRIBUTE TO SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL'S MEMORY.

    THE JAPANESE MESSAGE OF SYMPATHY TO QUEEN ELIZABETH WAS SENT BY EMPEROR HIROHITO. IN TOKYO, JAPAN'S POST-WAR PRIME MINISTER, MR. SHIGERU YOSHIDA, CALLED SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL "THE GREATEST MAN OF THE CENTURY."
