  • Description

THE FIRST PRODUCT STABILISATION AND CONTROL SYSTEM FOR THE APOLLO SPACECRAFT WHICH IS BEING DESIGNED TO CARRY THREE AMERICAN ASTRONAUTS TO THE MOON HAS BEEN COMPLETED. IT WAS BUILT IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA (MIDWEST U.S.) AND IS BEING SHIPPED TO NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, WHICH IS BUILDING THE VEHICLE IN DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA (FAR WEST U.S.).

A TEST PILOT CHECKS THE CONTROL IN AN APOLLO MOCK-UP, MAKING A SIMULATED FLIGHT TO THE MOON. HE USES COMPUTERS TO PROVIDE HIS INSTRUMENTS WITH SIMULATED SPACE FLIGHT INFORMATION.

THE FILM WELL ILLUSTRATED THE CRAFT'S MANOEUVRES. A SIDEWAYS MOTION OF THE CONTROL STICK CAUSES THE DRAFT TO "ROLL", AS SHOWN IN ANIMATION. AN UP AND DOWN MOTION ON THE STICK RESULTS IN A CHANGE OF "PITCH", A TILTING OF THE SHIP. BY TWISTING THE STICK, THE PILOT CAUSES THE CRAFT TO "YAW", WHICH IS A FISH-TAILING MOTION.

COMPLETION OF THE CONTROL SYSTEM MOVES THE SPACE MEN ANOTHER STEP CLOSER TO THE DAY WHEN THEY MAKE THEIR HALF-MILLION MILE ROUND TRIP TO THE MOON.
