  • Description

Since the revolution and ousting of the Rana regime, Nepal is making concerted efforts in opening itself. During the Rana rule, there were no roads in Nepal apart from few miles of it only inside Kathmandu. One of the draw backs with the government in pushing through the road building programs is shortage of funds and difficulty of the Himalayan mountain terrain.

Several new roads are now being built in Nepal with the help of India and United States. Road building is a hard work in this hill country. First the hill side is cut. The stones are picked from the hills and hand broken by men on the site of the work. They are then laid on the cut surface and a heavy road roller levels them. The roads are not metalled for a few years after they have been levelled so as to let them set with rain and traffic, In this process engineers also watch for landslides. In another three to four years the roads being now will built will be metalled. The road building provides much needed employment to poverty stricken people of Nepal where 80% of the land is owned by six families.
