  • Description

AN ADVISER TO THE DEPOSED KING IDRIS OF LIBYA TODAY (TUESDAY) VISITED THE FOREIGN OFFICE IN LONDON, AND PROMPTED SPECULATION THAT THE KING MIGHT WANT TO COME TO BRITAIN. AT THE SAME TIME, THE 80-YEAR-OLD KING LEFT TURKEY -- WHERE HE WAS TAKING A HEALTH CURE AT THE TIME OF MONDAY'S COUP IN LIBYA -- AND BOARDED A YACHT FOR GREECE.

KING IDRIS WAS SMUGGLED OUT OF A REAR ENTRANCE OF HIS HOTEL IN THE TURKISH SPA RESORT OF BURSA TO ELUDE CROWDS OF WAITING NEWSMEN.

HE WAS DRIVEN TO THE PORT OF MUDANYA AND BOARDED A CREEK YACHT. EARLIER, THE GREEK GOVERNMENT HAD GRANTED KING IDRIS AND HIS PARTY PERMISSION TO ENTER GREECE.

BEFORE THE ROYAL PARTY LEFT BURSA, A SPOKESMAN INSISTED THAT KING IDRIS WAS STILL THE RULER OF LIBYA.

IN LONDON, THE KING'S ADVISER, OMAR EL SHELHI, CALLED AT THE FOREIGN OFFICE TO ARRANGE A MEETING WITH THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR MICHAEL STEWART, LATER TODAY.

A FOREIGN OFFICER SPOKESMAN COULD GIVE NO DETAILS ABOUT THIS MEETING, AND WAS UNABLE TO CONFIRM OR COMMENT ON THE SPECULATION THAT KING IDRIS MIGHT WISH TO VISIT BRITAIN.
