  • Description

Cars from three starting points in this year's Monte Carlo rally passed through the West German checkpoint of Hanau yesterday (Saturday) before making the run down to the Riviera town. Ahead of them lay dangerous mountain passes and snow drifts which are making this year's rally one of the toughest on record.

In all 242 cars set out from ten different starting points in Europe and North Africa for the run to Monte Carlo. They're converging from five different routes into the town and are expected to arrive tomorrow (Monday).

Drivers from starting points in Warsaw and Oslo were joined by competitors from West Germany yesterday at Hanau including the favoured Porsche teams headed by Larrousse, Waldegaard and Andersonn.

A disturbing report today said that "non entrants" in the rally had caused near accidents on the routes. One report said that a local driver on one of the routes had played "chicken" with a South African entrant. The would be Monte Carlo Rally driver ended up by crashing into a tree.
