INTRODUCTION: The lead in Kenya's Silver Jubilee Safari Rally is still in the hands of Bjorn Waldegaard and Hans Thorszelius of Sweden driving a British works Ford Escort.

SYNOPSIS: In second place overall was Raun Aaltonen of Finland and Lofty Drews of Kenya in a Datsun Violet. This film was shot at the end of the first leg, when the atrocious conditions had reduced the number of original starters form 68 to 17. Sandro Munari, a Monte Carlo Rally Champion driving a Lancia Stratos, is still in the running.

So is the Lancia Stratos of Robin Ulyate and Ian Street, of Kenya.

Another Kenyan team, Joginder Singh and David Doig, in a Colt Lancer, who by Sunday (10 April) were in sixth place. Competitors have faced appalling hazards ranging from floods ad mud to rock-throwing villagers.

Jean Pierre Nicolas and Jean Todt driving the works Peugeot 504 Coupe are battling for third placing. Official fear that as few as five competitors may be left to cross the finishing line, if the rate of attrition continues.

Bert Shankland's Peugeot was closely followed by Zully Remtulla's Datsun Violet. The going was so though, officials cut out the second stage and the race was due to finish on Monday.

Robert Collinge's Datsun 160J was still in the race on Saturday. He won the Kenya Rally in 1974 and 1975. Another Kenyan - Vic Preston junior, in a Ford Escort. "Junior", as he's called, is one of the survivors of rock throwing incidents.
