  • Description

After extensive tests a new armament sub-system has gone into service in Vietnam on United States military helicopters.

Designed for use on Army helicopters, the new armament system, called the M-5, is an automatic 40mm grenade launcher mounted in a power-operated turret located below the nose of the aircraft. The fire control equipment is operated by the pilot by remote control.

The 40mm ammunition is stored on linked belts in the helicopter cargo compartment and is fed to the launcher through a flexible feed chute. The weapon itself is percussion fired, utilising anti-personnel fragmentation projectiles.

The new M-5 sub-system will operate in the target area role delivering a high volume of fire against groups of enemy soldiers, trucks and buildings.

Our film was made at the proving grounds at Aberdeen, Maryland, where new American weapons are tested.

Some U.S. helicopters in Vietnam are equipped with this new M-5 weapon.
