  • Description

PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR OFFICIATED AT A BRIEF CEREMONY IN DAKAR ON MONDAY TO MARK THE START OF A NEW SHIP IN THE SENEGAL MERCHANT NAVY. THE SHIP, CALLED "CAP SKIRRING" AFTER A BEAUTY SPOT IN THE CASAMANCE, WILL MAKE A WEEKLY COASTAL RUN.

    M. YVON BOURGES, SECRETARY OF STATE AT THE FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTRY IN CHARGE OF CO-OPERATION, ALSO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY AND LOOKED OVER THE SHIP WITH PRESIDENT SENGHOR.

BUILT IN NORWAY IN 1957 THE "CAP SKIRRING" CAN CARRY CARGO IN ITS 1,400 CUBIC METRE HOLDS, AND 84 PASSENGERS. THE PASSENGER ACCOMMODATION IS LUXURIOUSLY FITTED OUT, AND UP TO 50 PEOPLE CAN BE ACCOMMODATED IN THE DINING ROOM.

THE PRESIDENT SAID HE WAS PLEASED THAT THE NEW SHIP HAD JOINED THE LINE AND HOPED THAT ITS WEEKLY TRIP WOULD ENCOURAGE MORE TOURISM.
