  • Description

THIRTY-TWO ARMED INDONESIANS PASSED THROUGH A CHECKPOINT AT TEBEDU (SARAWAK) LAST FRIDAY, BEGINNING THE LONG-AWAITED WITHDRAWAL OF INDONESIAN GUERILLAS FROM MALAYSIAN FRONTIER TERRITORY. THAI AND MALAYSIAN OBSERVERS RAISED YELLOW FLAGS ON TREES AND POSTS THE PREVIOUS DAY TO INDICATE THE CHECKPOINT'S POSITION TO THE INDONESIANS.

AS THEY CLEARED THE BORDER POINT THE GUERILLAS SANG SONGS, CHATTED WITH MALAYSIAN SECURITY FORCES AND SHOUTED "LONG LIVE THAILAND, LONG LIVE MALAYA, LONG LIVE SUKARNO."
THE INDONESIANS' WITHDRAWAL FOLLOWED THURSDAY'S MEETING IN TOKYO OF THE LEADERS OF INDONESIA, MALAYSIA AND THE PHILIPPINES. MALAYSIA THEN DEMANDED THE WITHDRAWAL AS A CONDITION FOR ATTENDING THE SUMMIT CONFERENCE OVER THE EIGHTEEN-MONTH-OLD DISPUTE.

BUT SATURDAY'S SUMMIT MEETING OF PRESIDENT SUKARNO (INDONESIA), PREMIER TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN (MALAYSIA) AND PRESIDENT MACAPAGAL (PHILIPPINES) ENDED IN FAILURE. PRESIDENT SUKARNO REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE TUNKU'S CONDITION THAT HOSTILITIES AGAINST MALAYSIAN BORNEO SHOULD CEASE. HIS REFUSAL FOLLOWED AN AGREEMENT BY BOTH LEADERS TO A PHILIPPINES PROPOSAL THAT THE QUARREL DE TURNED OVER TO AN AFRO-ASIAN CONCILIATION COMMISSION.

THE WITHDRAWAL OF INDONESIAN GUERILLAS FROM SARAWAK AND SABAH WAS CANCELLED AND INDONESIA ANNOUNCED THAT THE "CONFRONTATION" OF MALAYSIA WOULD PROCEED.

BEFORE FLYING HOME THE TUNKU SAID THERE WOULD BE ANOTHER FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING LATER AND THAT EVERYTHING WOULD BE ARRANGED BY THEM FOR ANOTHER SUMMIT MEETING.
