Background: MALAYSIA CELEBRATED 10 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE WITH A FLAG-RAISING CEREMONY IN KUALA LUMPUR AT MIDNIGHT ON WEDNESDAY, FOLLOWED YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) BY ONE OF THE BIGGEST PARADES EVER SEEN IN THE CAPITAL. HOWEVER, THE FLAG RAISED ON WEDNESDAY BORE TWO MORE STRIPES -- ONE FOR SABAH AND THE OTHER FOR SARAWAK -- THAN THE NATIONAL FLAG FIRST RAISED ON 31ST OF AUGUST, 1957.

THE MAIN SQUARE IN KUALA LUMPUR WAS THE SITE OF WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S CEREMONY. SOME 10,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING CABINET MINISTERS AND MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS, LOOKED ON AS THE TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, MOUNTED A FLOODLIT DIAS -- THE SPOT FROM WHERE HE ANNOUNCED MALAYSIAN INDEPENDENCE 10 YEARS AGO.

THE SAME THREE MALAYS, TWO MEN AND A WOMAN, WHO RAISED THE FLAG IN 1957 HAD THE HONOUR AGAIN. EXCEPT FOR ONE TELEVISION SPOTLIGHT, ALL LIGHTS IN THE AREA WERE SWITCHED OFF AS THE FLAG WAS RAISED. AT THE FINAL STROKE OF MIDNIGHT, THE LIGHTS WERE SWITCHED ON AGAIN AND THE TUNKU LED THE CROWD IN SHOUTING "MERDEKA" ("FREEDOM") 10 TIMES -- ONCE FOR EACH YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE.

A FEW HOURS LATER, THE MALAYSIAN KING, WEARING THE UNIFORM OF THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES, TOOK THE SALUTE AT A MARCH PAST BY 4,000 SOLDIERS, POLICE AND OTHER MILITARY PERSONNEL. FIFTEEN MILITARY BANDS PROVIDED MUSIC, AND THREE HELICOPTERS AND FIVE AIR FORCE JETS FLEW OVER.
