Background: MORE THAN 1,500 TAX-DRIVERS STAGED A MASS DEMONSTRATION IN BONN TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AT THE FUNERAL OF A MURDERED TAX-DRIVER. IN A TWO-HOUR PROCESSION THE TAXIS SLOWLY DROVE THROUGH BONN: ON THEIR AERIALS WERE TIED BLACK RIBBONS, AND TO THEIR SIDES WERE FIXED PLACARDS DEMANDING THE RE-INTRODUCTION OF THE DEATH PENALTY.

MORE THAN 5,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FUNERAL OF KARL-HEINZ KOCH, STABBED LAST WEEK IN BONN. HE WAS THE 182ND TAXI-DRIVERS TO BE MURDERED IN GERMANY SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO. AFTER HE WAS STRUCK BY AN UNKNOWN ASSAILANT. KOCH WAS ABLE TO RAISE THE ALARM ON HIS TWO-WAY RADIO. HE WAS RUSHED TO HOSPITAL, BUT DIED A FEW HOURS AFTERWARDS. POLICE MADE SEVERAL ARRESTS, ONE OF WHOM WAS OF A FOREIGNER FOUND COVERED IN BLOOD.

THE SUCCESSION OF MURDERS HAS LED TO RENEWED CONTROVERSY ABOUT A RETURN OF THE DEATH PENALTY - AND FORMER CHANCELLOR ADENAUER HAS DECIDED TO BACK THE APPEAL BY THE TAXI-DRIVERS. DESPITE THE WAVE OF POPULAR FEELING, THERE SEEMS TO BE LITTLE CHANCE FOR THE REQUIRED TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY NEEDED IN THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT TO RE-INTRODUCE EXECUTION.
