Background: Following the lead of prominent Parliamentarians in siding with Cuba against the USA, known Communists in Mexico City were joined by hundreds of students in demonstrating for 2 days in protest against the US sugar quota cuts.

So far the Lopez Mateos Government has not officially declared for or against Cuba in the 'conflict' - it has maintained neutrality. These demonstrations are viewed as attempts to persuade the government to show support of Fidel Castro's 'struggle' against America.

There have been reports that Lopez Mateos wishes to act as concilliator between the 'combatants'.
