  • Description

MORE THAN 400 SPANISH WOMEN MARRIED TO GIBRALTANS, BUT LIVING WITH THEIR HUSBANDS AND CHILDREN IN SPAIN BECAUSE OF GIBRALTAR'S ACCOMMODATION SHORTAGE, CROSSED OVER TO THE ROCK THIS WEEK WITH THEIR FAMILIES.THEY'VE DONE THIS BECAUSE THEY FEARED THAT THEIR HUSBANDS, WHO WORK ON THE ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED BACK INTO SPAIN BY THE SPANISH AUTHORITIES.

THE SPANISH AUTHORITIES ARE BARRING GIBRALTANS, AMONG OTHER FOREIGNERS, FROM CROSSING INTO SPAIN WITHOUT OFFICIAL SPANISH RESIDENT'S PASSES - WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN.THIS FOLLOWS BRITAIN'S GRANTING OF SELF-GOVERNMENT TO GIBRALTAR, WHICH SPAIN CLAIM'S SHOULD BE PART OF SPANISH TERRITORY.

THE AUTHORITIES ARE ALSO STOPPING AT THE BORDER SPANIARDS WHO WORK ON GIBRALTAR.ABOUT 10,000 SPANISH WORKERS MAKE THE DAILY CROSSING TO THE ROCK -- PROVIDING TWO-THIRDS OF ITS WORK FORCE.MANY HAVE ALREADY HAD THEIR PASSPORTS STAMPED BY THE SPANISH BORDER GUARDS, BARRING THEM FROM ENTERING GIBRALTAR.

THE GUARDS STOP EVERYONE TRYING TO ENTER GIBRALTAR, AND CHECK THEIR NAMES AGAINST A SPECIAL LIST.THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE ON THE LIST ARE TOLD THEY CANNOT LEAVE SPANISH TERRITORY, AND ARE FACED WITH THE DIFFICULTY OF TRYING TO FIND WORK IN SOUTHERN SPAIN WHERE UNEMPLOYMENT IS HIGH.

IN LONDON, BRITISH OFFICIALS SAID YESTERDAY THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD TAKEN UP THE PROBLEM OF RESTRICTIONS ON TRANSIT ON THE GIBRALTAR FRONTIER WITH THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT AND WAS WATCHING THE SITUATION CLOSELY.

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS PREPARING SPECIAL MEASURES TO HELP BRITONS EXPELLED FROM SPAIN.THESE ARE EXPECTED TO INCLUDE THE PROVISION OF LIVING QUARTERS SO THAT THE PEOPLE CAN CONTINUE TO WORK IN GIBRALTAR.THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS ALSO AWAITING A REPORT FROM ITS OWN ECONOMIC EXPERT IN GIBRALTAR BEFORE DECIDING ON ANY MEASURE NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THE COLONY'S ECONOMY.
