Background: Insurgent violence followed an assassinated Khmer Republic government Minister and his aide to the grave in Phnom Penh on Wednesday (12 June).

Education Minister Keo Sangkim and his aide, Thach Chea, were assassinated during clashes last week between students and military police. As their bodies lay in a pagoda before being cremated, military police detained a woman and found parts for a plastic bomb in a monastery in the pagoda grounds.

One hundred people were detained after the assassinations and eight government Ministers resigned, causing a serious government crisis.

The state funeral was postponed a few days earlier because of fears for the safety of dignitaries taking part in the funeral procession through Phnom Penh streets. There were also fears of an insurgent rocket attack on the capital.

Prime Minister Long Boret spoke at the funeral and a massive security operation was in force. Armoured cars and fire engines stood near the pagoda, while helicopters patrolled overhead and gunboats guarded the Mekong River.

Emotions spilled over during the funeral ceremony. Thach Chea's widow fainted and had to be carried away.
