  • Description

The 11th Parliamentary Conference of the Association of the European Economic Community and the Organisation of African, Malagasy and Mauritian States opened at the National Assembly building in Abidjan, Ivory coast on Monday (27 January).

Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny spoke at the opening ceremony and said that Europe must understand that by helping Africa it is helping itself. He added that "Africa is the continent of the future" and said: "Old and young Africa have immense and still unsuspected possibilities and alone are capable of keeping old Europe eternally young by means of wide and frank co-operation."
Referring to current negotiations for 46 African, Caribbean and Pacific Ocean states to associate themselves with the Common Market Mr. Cornelius Berkhouwer, President of the European Parliament, said the accord "will constitute an original and precious solution to the problems which arise between two groups of countries which have different standards of living".

A new conference committee was set up, with Mr. Philippe Yace of the Ivory Coast as President, and nine Vice-Presidents: Mr. Berkhouwer (Holland), Giovanni Borsani (Italy), Michael Yearts (Ireland), Ludwig Fellermaeir (West Germany), Lord Ray (United Kingdom), Amadou Zisse Dia (Senegal), Bo-Boliko (Zaire), Tandong Muna (Cameroun) and Satcam Boolell (Mauritius).
