  • Description

PRESIDENT MAKARIOS OF CYPRUS YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) VISITED THE ONLY GREEK-CYPRIOT VILLAGE CUT OFF BY THE ISLAND'S TURKISH MINORITY. HE FLEW IN BY HELICOPTER BECAUSE OF THE "DANGER" OF TRAVELLING BY ROAD.

THE VILLAGE IS PAHIAMMOS, ON THE NORTH-WEST COAST OF CYPRUS. IT IS SURROUNDED BY VILLAGE MANNED BY TURKISH-CYPRIOT IRREGULARS.

THE CYPRIOT LEADER WAS GIVEN AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME, AND HE OFFERED THEM EXTRA CLOTHING AND OTHER SUPPLIES. SWEDISH UNITS FROM THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE-KEEPING FORCE, WHO PATROL THE AREA, WERE ON HAND FOR HIS ARRIVAL.

RECENT REPORTS HAVE SAID THAT SWEDEN HAS BEEN CONSIDERING WITHDRAWING HER TROOPS FROM THE ISLAND. SWEDEN, DENMARK, AND FINLAND HAVE ALL EXPRESSED "GRAVE CONCERN AT THE DETERIORATING SITUATION IN CYPRUS." THEY HAVE BETWEEN THEM MORE THAN 2,000 MEN IN CYPRUS.

IN A NOTE TO THE UNITED NATIONS, SWEDEN WARNED THAT SHE WOULD BE FORCED TO WITHDRAW "IF THE PARTIES MOST DIRECTLY CONCERNED DO NOT CO-OPERATE BETTER WITH THE U.N."
ON THURSDAY, U.N. SECRETARY-GENERAL U THANT APPEALED TO THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT TO END RESTRICTIONS ON THE MOVEMENT OF U.N. TROOPS.

(PRESIDENT MAKARIOS IS DUE IN ATHENS ON MONDAY FOR TALKS WITH THE GREEK GOVERNMENT).
