TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: Interviewer: "Sir William, what caused the Windscale accident? Was it a failure of man or gear?"

SEQ. 2: Sir William: "It was both. There was an error of judgment during a standard operation on the pile called ........ but the instrumentation was not good enough to enable the men to make a really accurate judgement."

SEQ. 3: Interviewer: "In the light of your committee's investigations, what lessons have been learnt by this .......accident?"

SEQ. 4: Sir William: "There are a lot of lessons to be learnt. Sir Alexander Flack is going to be the chairman of the Technical Committee to study all the scientific side; the Medical Research Council with the authority are going to look a bit more on the safeguards for single instances; I think those are the two."

SEQ. 4: Interviewer: "Is anything like this likely to occur again, either at say, Calder Hall or any of the power stations under the Electricity Board?"

SEQ. 4: "No, this accident could not happen at Calder Hall, not could it happen with the reactors of the Electricity authorities."
