  • Description

Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister of Singapore, saw British Premier Harold Wilson in London today in an attempt to stop the planned withdrawal of British forces from the base in Singapore by 1970.

The meeting of the two Prime Ministers followed two days of talks Mr. Lee had with senior Ministers on the fate of the Singapore base.

Indications were that Mr. Lee was prepared to see the existing base establishments cut by half by 1970, whereas British plans at present are for most of the estimated 20,000 men there to be pulled out by that date.
