Background: Two goals in the last three minutes gave Leeds a 3-0 win over their great rivals, Manchester City on Saturday (25 November).
For long periods, neither side could hit top form and defence was the dominating feature.
Leeds struck the decisive first blow in the 72nd minute with a goal by Trevor Cherry. Peter Lorimer and Allan Clarke were the other scorers.
During the game, four players were booked.....Terry Yorath and Clarke for fouls, Billy Bremner for showing dissent and Francis Lee for not retiring ten yards during an indirect free kick.
SYNOPSIS: Leeds, in white uniforms, take the kick-off in the second half against Manchester City at Elland Road on Saturday.
The first blow for Leeds comes off a free kick by Peter Lorimer. Trevor Cherry is the scorer.
The goal came in the seventy-second minute.
Most of the match was a struggle between defenders. For long spells neither side could hit top form. City's young centre half Colin Barrett was frequently prominent in checking raids by Leeds, while Trevor Cherry, Paul Madeley and Norman Hunter showed up well for Leeds.
Three minutes to play, and Leeds is still hanging on to a one-nil lead over City. But an unexpected breakthrough finds Lorimer in a position to score..... and he does.
Leeds two-nil and time just about run out for City.
With the game nearly over. Billy Bremner takes a free kick. The ball finds Allan Clarke ready with a header. Three nil for Leeds with less than a minute to play....a score that was to remain unchanged at full time.
