  • Description

President Constantine Tsatsos attended a parade of military strength on Tuesday (28 October) to mark Greece's entry into World War II.

The celebrations, known as Ochi-Day, and the impressive march-past in Salonika were seen as morale boosting for the population near the frontier in view of the strained relations with neighbouring Turkey.

President Tsatsos had earlier attended a service at a local cathedral and laid a wreath at the Monument of the Dead.

Similar ceremonies were held throughout the country to commemorate the day when Greece refused to accept an ultimatum from Italian forces poised to invade from Albania.

The military parade exhibited the sophisticated new weapons the Greek Armed Forces have recently acquired. It included a fly-over by jet fighters, march-pasts by crack brigades, mechanised units, missile carriers, heavy field guns and rocket launchers.
