    WHICH THE TOP ENTERTAINERS OF BRITAIN AND OVERSEAS WERE INVITED TO TAKE PART.

    AMONG THE ARTISTES WERE SOPHIE TUCKER, BOB HOPE, EARTHA KITT, HARRY SECOMBE,
    CLIFF RICHARD, AUSTRALIAN FRANK FIELD, ROSEMARY CLOONEY, DICKIE HENDERSON,
    NORMAN VAUGHAN, ANDY STEWART, EDMUNDO ROS AND JOHNNY DANKWORTH.

    THE ARTISTES WERE NOT PAID FOR APPEARING BUT THE AUDIENCE PAID UP TO 21 FOR A
    SEAT AND THE BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION PAID 20,000 TO TELEVISE THE SHOW
    (ALTHOUGH THE TELERECORDING OF THE SHOW WILL NOT BE BROADCAST UNTIL NEXT
    SUNDAY). ALL THE PROCEEDS -- EXPECTED TO TOTAL ABOUT 40,000 -- WILL GO TO THE
    VARIETY ARTISTS' BENEVOLENT FUND.

    MISS SOPHIE TUCKER RECEIVED THE GREATEST OVATION OF THE EVENING -- AND ONE OF
    THE GREATEST IN HER LIFE; MISS TUCKER WHO IS NOW IN HER LATE 70'S SANG SUCH OLD
    FAVOURITES AS "SOME OF THESE DAYS" AND "AFTER YOU'VE GONE" AND ALMOST MOVED THE
    AUDIENCE TO TEARS.
