  • Description

Students demonstrated through the streets of the Brazilian port of Recife, June 8-11, in protest against a university ban on a meeting which was to have been addressed by a revolutionary leader from Cuba. Troops were flown into the town to reinforce the police. Several times the students had to be dispersed by teargas bombs.

A large demonstration coincided with the visit to Brazil of Mr. Adlai Stevenson, who is at present on a tour of South American states for President Kennedy. While Mr. Stevenson had talks with President Quadros, warships of the Brazilian navy moved into Recife. The President said they will be used to prevent any student getting out of hand.

So far the sight of tanks and cold steel from the troops have been enough to break up any hostile gathering and meetings. Few of them are attending classes and their strike action has been supported by left-wing trade union leaders.
