    THREE THOUSAND AMERICAN TROOPS TOOK PART IN A JOINT ARMY AND AIR FORCE AIRDROP EXERCISE IN THE BRITISH SENNELAGER TRAINING AREA IN WESTPHALIA, WEST GERMANY, AUG 18. FLOW IN FROM AIR BASES IN FRANCE, SOLDIERS, GUNS, VEHICLES AND SUPPLIES WERE DROPPED FROM THE SKY WITH A SPECTACULAR ARRAY OF BILLOWING PARACHUTES.

    THE EXERCISE - KNOWN AS "WIND DRIFT" - IS TO LAST TEN DAYS. IT BEGAN ON AUG 15 WITH THE TRANSFER OF AMERICAN UNITS STATIONED IN WEST GERMANY TO BASES IN FRANCE. IT WILL END ON AUG 24 WITH A STRATEGIC AIR WITHDRAWAL.

    AMERICAN MILITARY SPOKESMEN EMPHASIZED THAT THE EXERCISE WAS NOT DIRECTLY CONNECTED WITH THE BERLIN CRISIS. THEY SAID IT HAD BEEN PLANNED A YEAR AGO. EARLIER REPORTS FROM WASHINGTON, HOWEVER, SAID AMERICAN AIRBORNE MANOEUVRES IN WEST GERMANY WOULD "DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO MOVE TROOPS QUICKLY ACROSS VAST DISTANCES TO TROUBLE AREAS SUCH AS THE APPROACHES TO BERLIN".
