  • Description

General Mobutu Sese Seko, the President of Zaire, arrived in Rome on Tuesday (8 May) for a two-day state visit to Italy.

President Mobutu was greeted at the airport by President Giovanni Leone and the Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti.

Talks are expected to centre on trade, and relations between the European Economic Community and Zaire. The two leaders have important bilateral trade, economic and financial affairs, to discuss because Zaire is one of the most successful examples of Italian trade, investment and technical assistance in Africa.

Total trade between Italy and Zaire reached 57 million pounds sterling (137 million US dollars) in 1972 -- with a heavy balance in favour of Zaire.

Zaire is also one of the African countries which signed the Yaounda agreement of association with the EEC which expires in 1975. Both Italy and Zaire are interested in the terms of its re-negotiation following Britain's entry to the EEC, and the subsequent association of Britain's former African colonies. President Mobutu is accompanied by Foreign Minister Nguzs Karl I Bond. After the state visit the President is expected to move into a Rome hotel and to on a private visit to North Italy.
