  • Description

THE LAST BRITISH TROOPS PULLED OUT OF LITTLE ADEN TODAY AND HANDED OVER A GBP14,000,000 STERLING MILITARY CAMP TO THE SOUTH ARABIAN ARMY.

THE WITHDRAWAL FROM LITTLE ADEN - WHICH IS 25 MILES (40 KMS) FROM ADEN ITSELF - IS IN LINE WITH BRITISH POLICY TO PULL ITS FORCES OUT OF SOUTH ARABIA BY JANUARY 9 NEXT YEAR, WHEN THE TERRITORY BECOMES INDEPENDENT. THE QUEEN'S OWN HUSSARS, WHO FIRST CAME TO LITTLE ADEN SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS AGO, LOWERED THEIR FLAG TO THE REGIMENTAL MARCH "LIGHT CAVALRY" AND THE SOUTH ARABIAN ARMY FLAG WAS HOISTED.

THE MILITARY CAMP HANDED OVER HAS AIR-CONDITIONED ACCOMMODATION FOR THREE INFANTRY BATTALIONS. OTHER BUILDINGS INCLUDE WORKSHOPS FOR ARMOURED CAR UNITS, SHOPS, A CINEMA, AND A GBP50,000 STERLING CHURCH. WHICH IS BEING CONVERTED INTO A MOSQUE. AS SOON AS THE BRITISH PULLED OUT, A RED, WHITE AND BLACK FLAG OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT - ONE OF THE TWO MAIN NATIONALIST GROUPS - WAS HOISTED ON THE TOWNSHIPS BUILDING IN LITTLE ADEN. MANY N.L.F. FLAGS WERE ALSO HOISTED ON HOUSES IN A COLONY OF LABOURERS EMPLOYED BY A BRITISH OIL COMPANY IN THE AREA.
