  • Description

ANGRY CROWDS STAGED DEMONSTRATIONS - THE SECOND IN TWO DAYS - OUTSIDE THE U.S. CONSULATE IN SANTO DOMINGO DECEMBER 12. THE CROWD, BELIEVING THAT INFORMERS OF THE DEPOSED TRUJILLO REGIME WERE INSIDE THE CONSULATE SEEKING VISAS TO THE UNITED STATES, HURLED ROCKS AND SHOUTED ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS. THREE MEN, THE OBJECTS OF THE CROWD'S WRATH, WERE TRAPPED FOR A SHORT TIME IN THE WAITING ROOM OF THE VISA OFFICE.

FOLLOWING THE OUTBREAK, POLICE HURRIED TO THE SCENE AND HUSTLED THE TRAPPED MEN OUT OF THE BUILDING. THEY WERE PELTED WITH ROCKS AND STRUCK BY THE YELLING MOB AS THEY HURRIED TO A WAITING CAR. ARMED POLICE, THROWING TEAR GAS BONES, TRIED TO BREAK UP THE CROWDS, BUT NOT BEFORE THE U.S. VICE CONSUL'S CAR HAD RECEIVED SOME ROUGH TREATMENT FROM SOME YOUNG DOMINICANS.

DECEMBER 13 THE U.S. ANNOUNCED THAT IT WAS CLOSING ITS DOWNTOWN SANTO DOMINGO CONSULATE INDEFINITELY, FOLLOWING CONTINUED DISTURBANCES.
