    UNITED NATIONS DAY WAS CELEBRATED IN KENYA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WITH A MILITARY PARADE OUTSIDE THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE IN NAIROBI. FLAGS OF ALL MEMBERS OF THE UNITED NATIONS WERE FLOWN IN THE WINDOWS OF THE OFFICE.

    THE PRIME MINISTER, MR KENYATTA, WAS UNABLE TO ATTEND THE PARADE. HIS SPEECH WAS READ OUT BY DR NJORGI MUNGAI, THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND HOUSING. IN IT, MR KENYATTA POINTED OUT THAT, AT THE FOUNDING OF THE UNITED NATIONS 19 YEARS AGO, THERE WERE 40 MEMBERS AND ONLY TWO OF THESE, ETHIOPIA AND LIBERIA, WERE AFRICAN STATES. TODAY THERE WERE 34 MEMBER STATES FROM AFRICA, AND MORE WOULD FOLLOW.

    THE NAIROBI CELEBRATIONS WERE WATCHED BY MR MALCOLM MACDONALD, THE GOVERNOR GENERAL OF KENYA, MR TOM MBOYA, THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE, AND THE UNITED NATIONS REPRESENTATIVE IN KENYA, DR CHIDZERO, WHO REPLIED TO MR KENYATTA'S SPEECH.
