  • Description

Spring fever hit Seattle, Washington State, on Tuesday (8 May) when high school students attempted to set a new world record by seeing how many of them could cram themselves into and on top of a stripped-down volkswagen "beetle" car, without any part of their bodies touching the ground.

Hopes ran high when the tally reached 112, but the students could not manage the second requirement for breaking the world record -- driving the car 16 ft. 3 ins. (4.8 m) with its human load.

However, they did break a Canadian record of III people on a stationary car. Undaunted, the students promised to have another crack next year at the world record of 103 people on a moving crack, which is held by students at a college in Bournemouth, England.

SYNOPSIS: However, the effort was not completely in vain. The students did break a Canadian record for the number of people on a stationary car. And, anyway, there's always next Spring, when they plan to have another try at the world record.
