Background: More than two thousand people of different creeds, including President and Mrs. Tubman, witnessed the dedication of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, on Sunday (15 November ).
Mrs. Antoinette Tubman cut a ribbon at the entrance to the impressive new cathedral which has been built by an Italian company at a cost of 200,000 dollars (about GBP 80,000 ). Much marble and coloured brickwork has been used in the construction.
The cathedral was consecrated by Bishop Grimley and a sermon was preached by the Archbishop of Cape Coast, Ghana, His Grace John K. Amissah. He called on Liberians to jeep up the faith taken to the country by the early missionaries. While Liberians should be grateful for the new building, he added, they should remember that the best cathedral was the human cathedral which was the creation of man to worship God.
The Archbishop also paid tribute to President and Mrs. Tubman for contributing 25,000 dollars ( more than GBP 10,000 ) towards the building costs. Other donors included Cabinet Ministers and Parliamentarians.
The cathedral is of modern but simple design. It will seat 800 people in pews and there is space for 300 extra chairs. A mosaic of the Crucifixion stands above the entrance.
Pope Paul and foreign Church leaders sent message of congratulation to mark the occasion.
