  • Description

PRESIDENT KAUNDA, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ZAMBIAN ARMY PAID A VISIT OF INSPECTION TO ONE OF ZAMBIA'S PRINCIPAL MILITARY TRAINING BARRACKS -- KALEWA BARRACKS, NDOLA.

THE BARRACKS HOUSES THE SCHOOL OF MILITARY TRAINING AND, IN DRIZZLING RAIN, THE PRESIDENT WATCHED DEMONSTRATIONS OF WEAPONS FIRING, DRIVING AND SIGNALLING.

PRESIDENT KAUNDA WAS ESCORTED AROUND THE BARRACKS BY THE ARMY COMMANDER, MAJOR-GENERAL C.M. GRIGG, THE MOST SENIOR OF A NUMBER OF BRITISH OFFICERS WHO ARE WITH THE ZAMBIAN ARMY TO SUPERVISE TRAINING. A NUMBER OF THESE OFFICERS ARE AFFECTED BY A ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) THAT OFFICERS WITHOUT SERVICE CONTRACTS WOULD NOT BE EXEMPT FROM ZAMBIAN JURISDICTION. MOST SENIOR OFFICERS HAVE CONTRACTS WITH THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT AND IT IS NOW EXPECTED THAT ZAMBIA WILL ASK THEM ALL TO SIGN CONTRACTS OF SERVICE.

DURING HIS BARRACKS TOUR, PRESIDENT KAUNDA MET THE WIVES OF SOME OF THE SOLDIERS AND THEY PRESENTED HIM WITH A GIFT OF A TANKARD TO MARK THE OCCASION.

IN A SPEECH TO THE TROOPS, THE PRESIDENT SAID THAT THEY WERE THE NATION'S INSURANCE AGAINST DISASTER AND CHAOS AND SAID THAT "WE LIVE IN A TROUBLE WORLD AND NO-ONE CAN PREDICT WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS."
