    ONE OF THE JAPAN'S ANCIENT SPORTS, HORSE ARCHERY, WAS PRESENTED AGAIN BEFORE LARGE CROWDS AT KAMAKURA, 25 MILES (40 KMS) SOUTH-WEST OF TOKYO YESTERDAY. THE OCCASION WAS A CELEBRATION OF THE FOUNDING OF THE FIRST SAMURAI GOVERNMENT AT KAMAKURA SOME EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

    MORE THAN 15,000 PEOPLE ASSEMBLED AT THE SITE OF THE TSURUGAOKA HACHIMAN SHRINE AT KAMAKURA -- ON THE SPORT WHERE THE FIRST SAMURAI SHOGUNATE ESTABLISHED HIS GOVERNMENT IN THE YEAR 1184.

    THE TEN WARRIORS WORE TRADITIONAL COSTUMES AND RODE SPECIALLY TRAINED HORSES. THEY AIMED THEIR BOWS AND ARROWS AT WOODEN TARGETS AND ALL HIT THEIR TARGETS.

    THE HORSE ARCHERY DISPLAY IS AN ANNUAL EVENT AND IS TYPICAL OF THE SPORTS ENJOYED BY THE ANCIENT SAMURAI WARRIORS OF JAPAN.
