Background: IN KEELUNG HARBOUR, FORMOSA, LIES THE LATEST ACQUISITION OF THE NATIONALIST CHINESE NAVY, AND THE CREW OF THE DESTROYER "NAN YANG," AND LISTENING TO A LECTURES.

GENERAL AND SHU-KING, CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF OF NATIONALIST CHINA, THANKS THE CREW WHO HAD BEEN UNDER TRAINING IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE NOVEMBER 1958 FOR BRINGING THE SHIP HOME.

GENERAL WANG INSPECTS THE 1,630 TON BENSON CLASS DESTROYER WHICH NATIONALIST CHINA RECEIVED FROM THE UNITED STATES UNDER THE MUTUAL SECURITY PROGRAMME. HE INSPECTED A GUARD OF HONOUR MOUNTED BY THE SAILORS.

DURING HIS INSPECTION OF THE SHIP, GENERAL WANG SAW A DEMONSTRATION OF THE WORKING OF THE ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN ON THE DESTROYER. THE "NAN YANG", POWERFUL, BOTH IN DEFENCE AND ATTACK ABILITIES, HAD SEEN MUCH ACTION IN MUHOPE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THE MEN OF THE SHIP RECEIVED A TOTAL OF 97 PURPLE HEART MEDALS.

THE DESTROYER IS NOW MANNED ENTIRELY BY A CHINESE CREW WHO HAD ABOUT EIGHT MONTHS OF TRAINING IN SOUTH CAROLINA, PRIOR TO THE TAKE-OVER. THE CHINESE SAILORS DEMONSTRATED THEIR PROFICIENCY IN HANDLING ALL THE ARMOURY ON THE DESTROYER.

THE NATIONALIST CHINESE CHIEF WHO MADE A THOROUGH INSPECTION OF THE DESTROYER WAS PLEASED WITH THE NEW ACQUISITION TO HIS COUNTRY'S GROWING NAVY - SO IMPORTANT FOR THE DEFENCE OF THE STRATEGIC OFF-SHORE ISLAND THREATENED BY THE COMMUNISTS ON THE MAINLAND OPPOSITE.
