  • Description

AMONG THE PRIVATE ART EXHIBITIONS CURRENTLY ON SHOW IN PARIS IS A DISPLAY OF THE WORK OF SOUTH AFRICAN GERARD SEKOTO. IT'S BUILT AROUND TWENTY PAINTINGS SEKOTO DID IN SENEGAL WHERE HE LIVED FOR A YEAR.

SEKOTO, A SELF-EXILED SOUTH AFRICAN - HE CLAIMS HIS COUNTRY IS UNBEARABLE TO ANY KIND OF ARTIST - HAS LIVED IN PARIS FOR 20 YEARS. SOME TIME AGO, THE SENEGALESE GOVERNMENT INVITED HIM TO A FESTIVAL OF NATIVE ART AND DURING THIS VISIT HE TOURED THE CASAMANCE REGION SOUTH OF GAMBIA. IT WAS HERE HE SAYS THAT HE FOUND THE INSPIRATION FOR THE RANGE OF WORK WHICH HE CALLS "THE RETURN TO THE SOURCE".

SEKOTO'S PAINTING IS HIGHLY INDIVIDUALISTIC, PORTRAYING THE RITUAL AND LEGEND OF THE PEOPLE OF THE CASAMANCE IN A CRUDE BUT ODDLY TENDER FASHION. CRITICS PRAISE HIS FEELING OF ATMOSPHERE AND HIS CLEVER USE OF COLOUR - NEVER VIOLENT, ALWAYS DELICATE AND HARMONIOUS, A LIGHT TOUCH OF SEMI-TONES AND PASTELS.

AMONG SEKOTO'S FAVOURITES ARE HIS PORTRAITS OF CHILDREN WHICH REMIND ONE OF THE "BLUE PERIOD" OF PICASSO.
