  • Description

A RUSSIAN PLOT TO STEAL A LEBANESE MIRAGE JET FIGHTER WAS CATEGORICALLY DENIED AT A SOVIET EMBASSY NEWS CONFERENCE IN BEIRUT YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). TWO EMBASSY OFFICIALS, ONE OF THEM A SENIOR RUSSIAN DIPLOMAT, WERE WOUNDED IN A GUN BATTLE WITH LEBANESE MILITARY THE PREVIOUS NIGHT. AN OFFICIAL LEBANESE STATEMENT ALLEGED THAT THEY WERE PLOTTING WITH A CASHIERED PILOT TO STEAL A MIRAGE FIGHTER.

THE PRESS CONFERENCE FOLLOWED A RUSSIAN DEMAND FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF THE WOUNDED OFFICIALS. LATER DURING WEDNESDAY EVENING, LEBANESE OFFICIALS RELEASED SOVIET EMBASSY EMPLOYEE VLADIMIR VASILIEV FROM A MILITARY HOSPITAL.

HE HAD BEEN WOUNDED IN THE HEAD AND ARM WHEN LEBANESE POLICE RAIDED HIS BEIRUT FLAT. THE SECOND WOUNDED MAN, SOVIET EMBASSY FIRST SECRETARY ALEXANDER KHOMIAKOV - WHO WAS IN THE FLAT AT THE TIME OF THE RAID - IS STILL SERIOUSLY ILL IN HOSPITAL WITH FIVE BULLET WOUNDS. IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT HE TRIED TWICE TO COMMIT SUICIDE AFTER HIS ARREST.

TODAY, LEBANON ORDERED BOTH RUSSIANS TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY. IN THE CASE OF FIRST SECRETARY KHOMIAKOV IT WILL BE AS SOON AS HE IS ABLE TO LEAVE HOSPITAL.

ACCORDING TO THE OFFICIAL LEBANESE ACCOUNT OF THE SHOOTING, THE TWO RUSSIANS WERE PLANNING THE FINAL STAGES OF STEALING A MIRAGE JET WHEN THE FLAT WAS RAIDED.

BUT THIS VERSION WAS FLATLY DENIED AT YESTERDAY'S EMBASSY PRESS CONFERENCE. SOVIET PRESS ATTACHE SUREN SHIROYAN DESCRIBED THE LEABANONESE POLICE RAID AS "BRUTAL PROVOCATION", ADDING THAT THE INCIDENT WAS DESIGNED TO WRECK THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOVIET-ARAB RELATIONS.

HE DENIED THAT THE RUSSIANS HAD BEEN ARMED, THAT THEY HAD RESISTED ARREST, AND THAT A CHEQUE FOR 200,000 DOLLARS (83,000 STERLING) WAS FOUND ON THEM.

THE CHEQUE WAS ALLEGEDLY MADE OUT IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER OF A LEBANESE PILOT WHO WAS TO HAVE FLOWN A STOLEN MIRAGE TO SOUTH RUSSIA TOMORROW. INSTEAD, THE PILOT REPORTED THE MATTER TO HIS SUPERIORS. HE HAD BEEN RECRUITED BY A CASHIERED LEBANESE AIR FORCE PILOT - ALSO ARRESTED BY POLICE - TO STEAL THE JET.
