  • Description

French Foreign Minister Michel Jobert made a 24-hour visit to Morocco beginning on Saturday (2 June) aimed at establishing "contact with Moroccan leaders".

    M. Jobert had talks with King Hassan and Premier Ahmed Osman and Moroccan Foreign Minister Ahmed Taibi Benhima.

Of his talks with the King, M. Jobert said they were mainly concerned with the development of joint action in the Atlantic-Mediterranean area in which both countries are situated. He told pressmen during his stay in Rabat that Morocco and France had the same concerns and "motives in this part of the world" and, in this respect, he thought his talks had been useful and would bear fruit.

The French Foreign Minister said that during the talks he "did not go into details" of problems concerning the 80,000-strong French community in Morocco.

French residents of Morocco whose farms were nationalised last March, and others whose private enterprises are to be taken over by Moroccans in the next two years, are seeking assurances regarding financial indemnities and facilities for transferring them to France. The Minister indicated that these problems would be the subject of further conversations between the two governments.

    M. Jobert left Rabat for Paris on Sunday (3 June) morning.
