  • Description

The USS Oklahoma City, flagship of the U.S. 7th Fleet, played host on Tuesday to Premier chiang Ching Kuo of Taiwan. The flagship, anchored at Keelung, about 35 miles northeast of Taipei, was on a courtesy trip.

Premier Chiang, who has been in the news recently with his call for no compromise with Peking, was welcomed aboard by the USS Oklahoma City's Captain, William A. Kanakanui, and Commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, Zice-Admiral G.P. Steele.

Based at Yokosuka, Japan, the 7th Fleet flagship makes courtesy calls on major ports within the West Pacific area. Following a brief reception, Premier Chiang was escorted on a tour of the USS Oklahoma City.

The guided-misale light cruiser is equipped with Terrier surface-to-air missiles and 6-inch guns. It has a crew of 950.

The U.S. 7th fleet has been patrolling the Western Pacific since the Second World War. It's fleet of 75 ships is not affected by the recent Congressional cut-back in U.S. military presence in Asia.
