  • Description

King Hussein of Jordan so Saturday criticised Palestinian guerrilla leaders and said they did not enter the battle against Israel.

The King spoke to reporters while attending manoeuvres with live ammunition by new units of the Royal Artillery Corps, which had completed their training at a camp about 42 miles (70 kms) north-east of Amman.

The was only a few miles away from the recent six days of fighting between the Jordanian army and the Palestinian army.

SYNOPSIS: King Hussein of Jordan visited an army camp in the north Jordan desert on Saturday, to watch graduating cadets carry out manoeuvres and speak to some of them before they joined their permanent units.

He received a rapturous welcome from officers and mend at this tense time of fighting in north Jordan with the Palestinian guerrillas. More than a thousand guerrillas are reported to have been killed in the six days of fighting with the Jordanian army, some of their leaders claiming others were rounded up by a trick and shot. Some were reported on Sunday to have crossed the river Jordan and given themselves up to the Israelis, rather than face capture by King Hussein's forces.

After the display by his loyal young soldiers, the king was interviewed by the press. He defended his army's action in the latest fighting, and denounced guerrilla attacks on his government.
