    Background: NEW DELHI, INDIA

The Indian Air Force publicly displayed its new Soviet-built Mi-24 helicopter gunship for the first time at its 52nd anniversary in New Delhi on October 8. The march-past salute was taken by the new Air Chief, Air Marshal Khatre, while Army Chief General Vaidya looked on at an impressive display of military aircraft and weapons. These, said diplomats, underline India's rapid military modernisation. The formidable 'D' version of the M1-24 armed with anti-tank missiles, 57mm rockets and a 12.7mm machine gun, was shown along with the Anglo-French Jaguar strike aircraft and modern Soviet-built fighters at the Palam Airbase near New Delhi. A newly acquired AN-32 Transport plane was also shown for the first time in public. Opening the parade, Air Chief Marshal L.M. Khatre said the French-built Mirage 2000 would soon be joining India's air force, marking what he called a "quantum jump" in technology.
