Background: Government House, Nicosia, and the date is July 1, when it was announced that British and Cyprus had finally reached agreement on all outstanding questions.
At Government House shortly before the announcement were those who played a leading part in the long talks which have held up the granting of independence to Cyprus. Among them Britain's Colonial Under-Secretary Julian Amery, and Governor of Cyprus Sir Hugh Foot; Archbishop Makarios who with his advisers, represented the Greek Cypriots; and speaking for the Turkish Cypriots Dr. Kutchuk, also accompanied by advisers.
Among the issues now settled are the boundaries of the military bases Britain will retain in Cyprus and their future, and Britain's financial aid to the future Republic of Cyprus.
Likely date for Independence Day: some time in mid August.
