    The first foreign branch of the Public Bank of Bangladesh--formerly the Eastern Mercantile Bank--opened in London today (April 7).

    Opening the branch was His Excellency the Bangladesh Ambassador in London, Mr. Syed Abdus Sultan, who unlocked the door of the new office and was the first to enter and sign the visitor's book.

    The Pubali Bank was nationalised last week; the change of name was not announced until today.

    Mr. M. Khaled, managing director and chairman of the bank attended the ceremony and brought massages of goodwill from the Governor of the Bank of Bangladesh and senior Government Minister.

    SYNOPSIS: In Finsbury Square, London, on Friday, the opening of an important new Bangladesh office. It's the first foreign branch of what used to be the Eastern Mercantile Bank of Bangladesh. It was renamed on Friday the Public Bank. Opening the new office was the Bangladesh Ambassador in London--His Excellency Mr. Syed Abdus Sultan....
    After unlocking the door of the new branch, the Ambassador was first to enter and sign the Visitors' Bank. He was followed by other distinguished guests--among them the Managing Director and Chairman of the bank--Mr. M. Khaled.

    Mr. Khaled brought with him messages of goodwill from the Governor of the Bank of Bangladesh and senior Bangladesh Government Ministers.

    An officials of the new office said the branch has been opened to help preserve the foreign aid and earnings Bangladesh needs to rebuild its economy.
