"We strongly urged the 250 million dollars for Egypt in order to continue the process that has been started. With respect to the hundred million dollars for ... contingencies, there have been no discussions with Syria about a similar programme. However, if Syrie ... if there is an agreement on the separation of forces between Egypt and Syria and Israel ... it is not impossible that a similar discussion might take place and we want to be in a position to make our contribution if that arises."

Background: United States Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger explained in a conference in Washington. United States, on Friday (26 April) that 100 million U.S. dollars (40 million pounds sterling) -- requested by the Nixon administration from Congress -- might be used to help Syria, if a permanent Middle East settlement could be arrived at.

Dr. Kissinger was speaking just before departing on a peace mission to the Middle East where there is still heavy fighting between Syria and Israel on the Golan Heights.
