  • Description

PRESIDENT MOBUTU HAS BEEN VISITING THE WOUNDED FROM THE RECENT FIGHTING IN THE CONGO'S EASTERN PROVINCES. SOME 600 PEOPLE WERE EVACUATED FROM KISANGANI SOON AFTER THE NATIONAL CONGOLESE TROOPS CAPTURED THE TOWN FROM THE REBELS. MANY OF THOSE EVACUATED WERE WOUNDED INCLUDING ABOUT 100 CONGOLESE SOLDIERS WHO HAD FACED FIERCE FIGHTING DURING THE BRIEF REBELLION.

GIFTS FOR THE WOUNDED IN THE FIGHTING HAVE BEEN GIVEN BY A WOMEN'S AUXILIARY ORGANISATION. THE GIFTS INCLUDE SMALL PERSONAL ITEMS AS WELL AS SWEETS AND CIGARETTES. MANY OF THOSE IN HOSPITAL IN KINSHASA HAVE NOT ONLY SUFFERED INJURY AND SHOCK, BUT ALSO THE TEMPORARY LOSS OF THEIR HOMES AND THEIR FAMILIES. NOW PEACE HAS RETURNED TOT HE AREA MOST ARE EXPECTED TO RETURN.

PRESIDENT MOBUTU'S FIRST CALL ON THE WOUNDED AS AT THE DANISH HOSPITAL IN KINSHASA. THE CONGOLESE PRESIDENT WAS WELCOMED BY THE DIRECTOR, DR. RAFT JACOB. 63 SOLDIERS ARE AMONG THE WOUNDED AT THE DANISH HOSPITAL. GENERAL MOBUTU HAD A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR EACH OF HIS MEN. THEY HAD NOT HESITATED TO RISK THEIR LIVES FOR THE GOOD OF THEIR COUNTRY, HE SAID.

AFTERWARDS GENERAL MOBUTU WENT ON TO THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF LOVANIUM. 45 WOUNDED SOLDIERS WERE BEING TREATED AT THE HOSPITAL -- MAINLY SOLDERS FROM THE EASTERN REGION OF THE CONGO. THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE CONGOLESE ARMY, GENERAL BOBOZO ACCOMPANIED THE PRESIDENT ON HIS VISIT.

THE VISITORS WERE SHOWN ROUND THE HOSPITAL BY MGR. GILLON, THE RECTOR, MGR. TSHIBANGU, VICE-RECTOR AND MGR. MALULA, ARCHBISHOP OF KINSHASA.

MANY OF THE SOLDIERS HAD BEEN GRAVELY INJURED BY GUNFIRE, AND THE TASK OF THE MEDICAL STAFF WAS MADE MORE DIFFICULT BECAUSE MOST OF THE SOLDIERS HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET EXPERT MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. AS A RESULT MANY OF THE WOUNDS HAD FESTERED.

CALM HAS RETURNED TO THE TROUBLED EASTERN REGION NOW, BUT A GROUP OF REBELS, LED BY FOREIGN MERCENARIES, ARE REPORTED TO BE IN HIDING NEAR PUNIA SOME 150 MILES (250 KMS) SOUTHEAST OF KISANGANI.
