    President Moktar Ould Daddah of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania began a two-day visit to Sokoto in northern Nigeria on Wednesday (18 July).

    The visit came half way through President Daddah's official six-day visit to Nigeria. He and his wife were accompanied to Sok??? to by his host, General Gowon and his wife.

    His visit to northern Nigeria was to meet Nigeria's Moslem leader, Alhaji Sir Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto. The Sultan is the President-General of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Nigeria and one of the world Moslem leaders. President Daddah is himself an Islamic scholar.

    At the Sultan's palace, the visitors were entertained by a traditional durbar featuring camelmen, dancers, singers, and drummers.

    The Sultan presented the Mauritanian leader with three books.
