  • Description

Taking a break from his strenuous coaching and exhibition match tour of African countries, United States tennis star Arthur Ashe paid a courtesy call on Nigerian head of state General Yakubu Gowon in Lagos on Monday (November 2).

Ashe, and his Davis cup doubles partner Stan Smith, have been touring six African countries. In Lagos, the played -- and beat -- Nigerian doubles champions Lawrence Awopegba and Yemisi Allan. Then the two Americans played an exhibition singles match.

During the visit to General Gowon, Ashe presented the Nigerian head of state with a photograph of himself. Then the coloured American star spent several minutes discussing the finer points of his game with General Gowon -- who is himself a keen lawn tennis player.
