  • Description

ON HIS SECOND DAY IN LONDON, THE 37TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES RICHARD MILHOUS NIXON, TODAY HAD A BUSY PROGRAMME WHICH INCLUDED A THREE-HOUR MEETING WITH PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON AT 10 DOWNING STREET; LUNCH WITH THE ROYAL FAMILY AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE; SCHEDULED AND UNSCHEDULED STOPS AT WESTMINSTER.

TODAY'S MORNING MEETING AT 10 DOWNING STREET LASTED FOR NEARLY THREE HOURS AND WAS THE SECOND TIME THE PRESIDENT AND THE PRIME MINISTER HAD MET SINCE MR NIXON'S ARRIVAL THE PREVIOUS AFTERNOON, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) HE WENT STRAIGHT FROM THE AIRPORT TO "CHEQUERS", THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICIAL COUNTRY RESIDENCE, FOR AN EVENING OF DINNER AND TALKS BEFORE RETURNING TO HIS LONDON HOTEL.

FOLLOWING TODAY'S MEETING, PRESIDENT NIXON AND PRIME MINISTER WILSON DROVE TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE FOR LUNCH WITH QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH. IT WAS AN INFORMAL LUNCH WITH ONLY TWELVE PEOPLE PRESENT, INCLUDING PRINCE CHARLES, PRINCESS ANNE, U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE WILLIAM ROGERS, RETIRING U.S. AMBASSADOR TO BRITAIN DAVID BRUCE AND BRITISH AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE TO THE U.S. JOHN FREEMAN.

THE MENU CONSISTED OF POACHED SALMON, LAMB CUTLETS AND LOGANBERRY ICE. THE OCCASION WAS ADDITIONALLY UNIQUE IN THAT IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT LIVE TELEVISION CAMERAS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED INSIDE THE PALACE CHAMBERS, AND THE TELERECORDING HAVE BEEN BROADCAST THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE.

AFTER THE LUNCHEON, MR NIXON CAUSED CONSIDERABLE CONCERN TO HIS SECURITY ESCORT BY TWICE DEPARTING FROM HIS SCHEDULED ROUTE TO STOP AND TALK TO PEOPLE GATHERED IN THE STREETS TO WATCH THE MOTORCADE. THE FIRST TIME, JUST OUTSIDE BUCKINGHAM PALACE; THE SECOND, OUTSIDE WESTMINSTER ABBEY BEFORE HE WAS DUE FOR A WREATH-LAYING CEREMONY AT THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER. HE ALSO PAID A SURPRISE VISIT TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS ARRIVING DURING "QUESTION TIME" TO HEAR THE PRIME MINISTER ANSWER MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT ON SUBJECTS RANGING FROM BIAFRA TO BRITISH ECONOMY.

THE PRESIDENT THEN RETURNED TO HIS HOTEL WHERE HE HELD INFORMAL MEETINGS WITH VARIOUS FIGURES OF BRITISH PUBLIC LIFE, INCLUDING FORMER PRIME MINISTER HAROLD MACMILLAN, UNIVERSITY DONS AND TRADE UNION LEADERS. IN THE EVENING HE RETURNED TO NO. 10 DOWNING STREET FOR A BLACK-TIE, WORKING DINNER WITH MR. WILSON.

HIS STAY HAS BEEN PUNCTUATED BY THE MOST MASSIVE SECURITY SCREEN THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN AND, FOLLOWING DEMONSTRATIONS OUTSIDE THE PRESIDENT'S HOTEL AFTER HIS ARRIVAL YESTERDAY (MONDAY), SEVERE JAIL SENTENCES AND FINES WERE PASSED ON A NUMBER OF PEOPLE.

TOMORROW MORNING (WEDNESDAY) PRESIDENT NIXON FLIES ON TO BONN FOR THE THIRD STOP OF HIS EIGHT-DAY EUROPEAN TOUR.

OUTSIDE WESTMINSTER ABBEY, PRESIDENT NIXON CHATTED WITH WELL-WISHERS.
