WEST GERMANY IS PUSHING AHEAD IN ITS SHARE OF THE EUROPEAN ROCKET PROGRAMME. THE BONN?

  • Description

WEST GERMANY IS PUSHING AHEAD IN ITS SHARE OF THE EUROPEAN ROCKET PROGRAMME. THE BONN GOVERNMENT IS FINANCING THE THIRD STAGE OF THE ROCKET, BEING BUILT BY THE EUROPEAN LAUNCHER DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION (ELDO). THE FIRST STAGE WILL BE BRITAIN'S BLUE STREAK, AND THE SECOND FRANCE'S VERONIQUE. BOTH THESE STAGES HAVE ALREADY UNDERGONE ADVANCED STATIC TESTS.

AT THE FOCKE WULF PLANT IN BREMEN, SCIENTISTS AND TECHNICIANS ARE BUSY ASSEMBLING THE ENGINE OF THE THIRD STAGE. THE WEST GERMANS ARE PAYING 19 PER CENT OF THE GBP70 MILLION SCHEME, WHICH WILL ULTIMATELY PUT COMMUNICATIONS AND WEATHER SATELLITES INTO ORBIT.

AT THE WESER-FLUG FACTORY, ALSO IN BREMEN, THE FUEL TANKS FOR THE THIRD STAGE ARE BEING BUILT. SIX EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND AUSTRALIA ARE CO-OPERATING IN THE ROCKET PLAN.

A PROTO TYPE OF THE THIRD STAGE HAS ALREADY BEEN PUT TOGETHER AND GIVEN A STATIC TRIAL AT A TEST-BED NEAR MUENSTER, SOUTH OF BREMEN.

IT IS HOPES THAT ACTUAL TEST FIRINGS WILL BEGIN LATE NEXT YEAR FROM THE WOOMERA ROCKET RANGE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA. THE FIRST SATELLITE IS BEING BUILT IN ITALY, ALTHOUGH BRITAIN AND FRANCE ARE PUSHING AHEAD WITH THEIR OWN SATELLITE PROJECTS.
