The coveted Academy Award was presented to him by Maggie Smith--last year's best actress--at last night's (thursday's) glittering gathering of Hollywood stars.

    SYNOPSIS: Hollywood's glittering Academy Award presentations took on a British look when it came to the choice of best supporting actor. Maggie Smith, last year's best actress, was presenting the award. And British actor John Mills was among the nominees....
    The role which won John Mills the award was that of a drooling village idiot. Initial problems very nearly caused him to abandon the part. But he persevered, spent four months in rehearsal and finally reaped the film industry's top award.
