Background: The much-publicised Hungarians were well beaten by a hefty Swedish XI at the Solna Stadium, Stockholm, last night, despite some elegant and accurate midfield play in the early stages. The Swedes, who turned out with five Italians in the team, thus go through to the last eight of the competition.
Gren, 37-year-old inside-forward, was the schemer of the Swedish win, with the fast wingers, Hamrin and Skogland, brilliantly taking up his prompts. Three times early on, Gren put the Hungarian goal in danger and it was his eleven pass in the 24th minute to Hamrin that resulted in the closest of shaves for Hungary when the winger just failed with a lob into an empty goal. However, it was Hamrin who made no mistake ten minutes later pushing in a ball dribbled downfield by Skogland. These two wingers will be a danger to Wales in this Sunday's game.
Hamrin scored again for Sweden in the 54th minute, flipping the ball over the head of Grosics. Then Tichy, Hungary's only real shooting force, who had been injured in the first half and slowed up, scored from the centre-forward position in the 77th minute. Liedholm had previously missed a penalty for Hungary but undoubtedly the much-improved Swedes deserved this win.
