  • Description

President Banda of Malawi received a warm reception when he arrived in Taiwan for a one-week's State visit. He was met by President Chiang Kai Shek and his Cabinet, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and by a 21-gun salute.

In an address of welcome, President Chiang said the people of Malawi and Taiwan shared the same ideals "and are similarly dedicated to the cause of freedom, justice and peace.

"This identity of purpose," President Chiang said, "unites our two countries in the closest of bonds, notwithstanding the great distances that separate us."
In his reply, President Banda said he was making the visit because he wanted to see some of Taiwan's achievements.
